Masterful Paul Dixon grabs second

In the first round of the Bush Healthcare & Dream Sportswear Circuit Races, an event for the Masters Over 40's & Over 50's National Road Race Series new signing for this season Paul Dixon grabbed a well earned second place in the first round on Saturday, 13th of May, 2006

The VS Cycles rider rode a hard race with a class field but managed to get in the final break of 5 riders to be in the sprint for the top places. This result gives Paul a valuable start in the series of four races held throughout the coming months. The top 5 places were

  1. Phil Rayner, Welland 1:57:08
  2. Paul Dixon, VS Cycles Same Time
  3. Andy Eagers, Derby Mercury Same Time
  4. Peter Georgi, Mid Devon Same Time
  5. Malcom Whitehead, Kingsnorth 1:57:11
  6. Keith Lilly, Pm 1:57:33

Paul had his first win of the season on the same circuit on the 9th of April in a 36 mile race for 2/3/4 category riders. Second place went to Robert Parkin of Heanor Clarion CC and third was Clive Lockwood of Derby Mercury CC.

In other events Paul has been gaining minor places in races along side his teammates Matthew Armitage and John Doherty with all riders hitting form just before the Yorkshire Divisional championships next weekend.

Matthew has secured a 9th place in the 53.5 mile Hambleton Road race in Northallerton on the 2nd April and has since followed this with an excellent 5th place in the gruelling Four Dales Spring Classic again in North Yorkshire. The 56 mile event for 1/2/3 cat riders puts some serious climbs into the riders legs and both Matthew and fellow club rider John Doherty (8th place) were pleased with the days work.

John Doherty has continued his good form from last season gaining some good top ten finishes including his 8th place in the Four Dales followed by an 8th place in the Nigel Measom Two Day Road Race held over the weekend of 29/30 April. The race was centred around Walton village in Leicestershire and comprised of 3 stages over two days.

In the first stage, a 64.2 miles road race, John finished in 6th place, this was then followed in the afternoon by a 2.9 mile time trial, in which John unfortunately lost some time on his rivals finishing in 19th place. Sunday 30th was the final stage, a 75 miles road race in which John finished in 21st place.

The winner overall was Stephen Gibson of VC Briganti CNP, with Andrew Eagers of Derby Mercury RC in second place.

John and Matthew were in action again this weekend racing in the Steve Rigby memorial road race around the circuit at Ledston and Fairway Ings near Castleford. John attacked early in the race and along with 4 other riders they kept the pressure on the chasing group holding a 20 second lead. Matthew was in the large chasing group of about 15 riders and this group finally caught the early leaders with only a few laps remaining. In the final sprint for the places Matthew finished a creditable fourth meanwhile John paid the price for working hard in the small break away and claimed some minor points for 11th spot. The 63 mile race was won by Matthew Kipling of VC Briganti.

Next week, results from the Yorkshire divisional championships plus an early season review for time specialist Andy Marshall.
