Personal bests for Andy Marshall VS Cycles time trial speciallist Andy Marshall has been having a terrific season so far this year recording two personal best times and been placed three times on the podium.
The Lightcliffe based rider has been with the club since it formation and has regularly had good results but this year has seen a marked improvement. His achievements so far include: March 5th Featherstone RC 17 mile hilly TT, 3rd place in 43.34 Event was won by Ian Furnace of Doncaster Wheelers in 41.57. April 2nd was the classic Circuit of the Dales 50 mile hilly and with a time of 2.23.01 on the finishing board he was at point leading the race. However with some strong riders still to complete the course he was eventually pushed back to 22nd place. The winner of this beast of an event hosted by Nelson Wheelers was Gethan Butler of Preston Wheelers in a time of 1.59.59. Then Andy hit some real form putting in two personal best times. The first one in the Yorkshire Cycling Federation 25 mile time trial held at Boroughbridge on the 15th April. His time of 54.43 gave Andrew 6th place out a field of 80 riders. The winner being former VS rider Blair Buss (Team Swift Allsports) in a time of 52.28. On the following weekend he then put in a great ride to take seventh place in the Otley CC 10 mile time trial event on a course at Tadcastor. His personal best time of 21.50 at an average speed of 27.481 mph was good enough to take seventh place out of a field of 90 riders, the winner was Stephen Ward (Team Swift Allsports) in 21.24 (28.037 mph). The May Day bank holiday weekend was also rich pickings for the rider with another two podium places. The first was on Sunday 29th April at Pocklington in an event hosted by Team Swift, when Andrew claimed 3rd place in a time of 1.28.41 for the 32 mile hilly course. The winner was Ian Dalton (Cherry Valley RT) in 1.24.40. Then on the May day bank holiday another strong performance in the Holme Valley Wheelers 17 mile hilly event at Holmfirth was good enough for a second 3rd place of the weekend in a time of 47.55. The winner was Carl Saint (Yorkshire RC) in a time of 46.22. Andrew is also part of the road racing team and secured his best result so far with an excellent second place in the 60 km event held by Holme Valley Wheelers around the Hade Edge Circuit on the 20th of May. Andrew said “ I sat in the in bunch for most of the race, which was 9 laps altogether. Riders kept getting dropped on the mile long drag each lap, which helped thin down the field. A rider from Ashfield CC had managed to breakaway from the main bunch but with just under 2 laps to go I attacked and got a gap along with 5 or 6 others. We all worked together and caught the lad from Ashfield CC. He stayed with us and tried to go up the climb on last lap, which caused a split in this leading group. I managed to keep it going and lost out by half a wheel in the sprint to get second.” Andrew summed it with a final statement “my best road race result in years, so near and yet so far.” The winner was Nick Rylance (Wakefield CC Exponential) with Andrew Marshall (VS Cycles) second and Mick Tomlinson of Mossley CRT in third. Andy puts his season’s success down to several things, his relentless training schedule a new state of the art bike for this season but most of all the support given by his wife Alison. << back |
