“Matty” leads the way

Riding in his last race of the season before setting off on honeymoon, Matthew Armitage secured the vital 6 points required to regain his 1st category racing licence by finishing in 12th place in the Dinnington CC road race. The 63.5 mile event held on 3.9.06 was won by Marcus Smith of Cleveland Wheelers.

Matthew also had another great ride in the Tumby’s road race held by Rutland CC on 20.8.06 when a 2nd place and 12 points set him up for being in touching distance of the magic 200 required for moving back to 1st category status for next season. The 46.5 mile race was won by Dieter Droger of Wakefield CC.

John Doherty comfortably held onto the 1st category race licence he acquired last season with a point’s tally of 180.

A 4th place on 6th August at the Leeds RRC senior road race over 64 miles followed by 10th place in the Bridlington CC Autumn road race on the 13th August rounded off his season nicely. Johnny Limebear also riding in the VS colours managed to out manoeuvre John in this race and got into an early break which stayed away from the chasing bunch. This enabled Johnny to snatch 7th spot and some vital points towards the clubs regional total.

The 67mile event was won by Ashley Brown of Featherstone CC.

Paul Dixon and Mick Lever both rode in the 2 stage Clifton CC – Cycle Heaven event at Sheriff Hutton on 10th September. While Paul had a good result in both stages, the demanding circuit of the main race was too much for many riders including Lever and he climbed off along with over half the field before even 2 of the 5 laps had been completed. Paul finished 10th equal in the 3 mile prologue time trial, followed by a gusty ride to clinch 7th spot in the 55.5 mile road race held in the afternoon. This gave Paul 7th place in the overall classification and more valuable points in the fight to keep the team in first place in the region.

Simon Wilson of Worcester St Johns CC was the overall winner of this event.
